NAKAMURA Kazumi

1991

For Nakamura, who started his career as an artist in the early 1980s, the starting point lay in the pictorial space of American Abstract Expressionists such as Pollock, Newman, and Rothko. But he did not intend to simply inherit it. Rather, through divesting it of its privileged status and relativising it, he attempted to create a totally new pictorial space. It was very natural for Nakamura, who has been familier with the pictorial space of Japanese traditional paintings as that of horizontal scroll painting and screen paintings from his student days. To reach this goal, he employed motifs of "Y-shape" and "Diagonal Grid" to integrate the picture and used different kinds of pictorial spaces and styles simultaneously. This painting belongs to his "C opened" series started around 1990. The "C opened" refers to the motif of horizontal arc in the picture. It has the effect of creating a local distortion in the obliquely sliding space of the Diagonal Grid, and thus making a local rupture in the pictorial space. In addition to the splendid palette of red, orange, green, and purple, the expressionistic brushstrokes that start to gain vehemence in this work became an important tool in creating the pictorial space he pursued. This title was given to the painting as its colors reminded the artist of Giorgione's "La Tempesta".
