During the Cultural Revolution, Fang Lijun was a boy and lived a persecuted life for having an upper-class grandfather. According to the critic Li Xianting, he is one of the third generation artists after the Cultural Revolution. Starting his activity as an artist in 1993 shortly after graduating from The Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing, he became an internationally recognized artist through his participation in "China's New Art, Post-1989" held in Hong Kong and other exhibitions. From his work we feel his cool viewpoint to the reality, and it has been called“cynical realism.” The man with a shaved head, who frequently appears in his works, looks like the artist himself. In this picture, he floats among the waves naked, with his eyes closed and seemingly in quiet meditation. In the sunlight cast from above, being in the states of the uneasiness of the floating, and the comfort of weightlessness, so our curiosity about his thoughts are all dissolved into the gray waves also.
