2011
Tatsuno’s print works are lithographs printed using limestone plates, an unusual medium recently, undertaken from February to March 2011 during her residency at the fine-art printing studio IDEM in Paris. They are numbered in the order produced. These she debuted along with Rose Colors, Ahead, Behind, a work completed on her return to Japan. “The feelings in my heart do not emerge unless I paint my colors on adequately,” Tatsuno once said, and as this suggests, the “rose colors” of the piece are produced by carefully layering many colors. Then, the rounded forms, the angular form, and the belt-like form depicted in “rose colors” occupy positions not readily distinguished as ahead or behind on the picture plane. In this way, the artist’s concern for how “objects” have relationship with their surrounding space, and how to express this using colors and shapes, has resulted in a distinctive pictorial space.
