MOT Collection: Seven Beauties in the Bamboo Forest / Small Glow/ Pre-30th Anniversary Exhibit: Leiko IKEMURA Mark MANDERS Rising Light / Frozen Moment

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is home to over 5800 works of art from modern to contemporary, with a particular emphasis on the post-war period. The MOT Collection exhibitions present works from these holdings, adopting a different approach each time to demonstrate the diverse attractions of contemporary art. An exhibition on the first floor titled “Seven Beauties in the Bamboo Forest” focuses on the works of seven female artists, primarily recent acquisitions. The title originates in that of a KONO Michisei painting in the Museum collection, in which the ancient Chinese “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove,” spurning worldly preoccupations to congregate in a bamboo grove and shoot the philosophical breeze, are depicted as seven females. Inspired by the sight of these women of different times and cultures, glowing as they gather harmoniously amid flowers and birds, for this exhibition we decided to shed light on some female artists that have not previously had much exposure at the Museum. Offerings from MADOKORO (AKUTAGAWA) Saori and TAKAGI Toshiko, both born exactly a century ago, are joined by newly acquired works from URUSHIBARA Hideko, KOBAYASHI Donge, and MAEMOTO Shoko. Works by ASAKURA Setsu and FUKUSHIMA Hideko already in the collection are grouped together for viewing. Also on the first floor, a small exhibition titled “Small Glow” includes works by Olafur ELIASSON and YAMAMOTO Takayuki. The third floor, “Rising Light / Frozen Moment”, is the venue for a special showing of work by Leiko IKEMURA and Mark MANDERS staged to celebrate the Museum’s 30th anniversary in 2025. Ikemura’s works, which use surging color and imagery to represent different phases of formation and change in things that exist in this world, and the taut spaces of Mark Manders, capturing stationary moments in time, are joined also by works by both artists from outside the collection, in this standout display to enjoy alongside prints by KOMAI Tetsuro and others, and paintings by artists including Robert RYMAN and Agnes MARTIN.
