Hockney's career goes back to the early 1960s when he was recognized as a leader of British Pop. He moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and actively participated in many art forms, including painting, photography, prints, and opera stage sets. He produced many prints in particular, which he started to create in his teens and still continues to produce today. The techniques he mainly used were copperplate and lithograph, with which he sometimes combined screen print. His most distinctive works, which started to appear in the late 1980s, are those that make use of copiers and laser printers. Minute detailing in copperplate in notable in works with literary themes from the '60s, and lithographs with relaxed lines and bright colors are found in his '70s pieces that portray sunny and spacious scenes, presumably from Los Angeles, and people surrounding him. Color lithograph, which requires a more complex process, is employed effectively in his '80s series "Moving Focus," which incorporate multiple viewpoints and perspectives in a two-dimensional plane. These were followed by the "Home Made Prints" series which stress improvisational elements by simplifying the print making process. In the 1990s, the artist has been engaging himself in further experiments to create new kinds of space on the paper, and has been incorporating laser and inkjet printing in his work. According to the artist, "in the graphic work, there is a delight in the medium itself, etching or lithography". With his vigorous interest in new materials and techniques, which are coupled with his sensitivity to their nature, Hockney continues to create actively today, producing works with diverse themes as "Demonstrations of Versatility".
