Hamish Fulton presents records of his own journies, his own walks. Such objective data as the location, date, time, as well as subjective information including brief text and, as in the case of this work, a landscape photograph taken when he was thus moved, are presented in a book, an exhibition, or an installation. They are not evidences of Fulton's walk, which started in nature walks in Scotland and Wales in the late 1960s and then continued to cover various parts of the world, nor do they provide their reconstruction. His experiences of communicating directly with nature through walking in it are strictly personal, and we will never be able to share them. But these works would not have existed without his walk, and in imagining the unpresented details of the roads taken or the whole of the panorama from the fragmented landscapes, we are engaging in a dialogue with the artist. Fulton does not consider himself as a professional photographer, sculptor, or pilgrim. Instead of loudly voicing criticism or lapsing into nihilism, he asserts that the simple act of walking can become art, and thus practices a form of Conceptual Art.
