Buckets, mops, and other ordinary objects that might be found anywhere emerge from the places where they are kept and move about, seemingly self-propelled. Videos of several such moving objects replay endlessly on the monitors, each object producing sounds with its own distinctive rhythm, and their collective sounds converging in a single sound work that dominates the space. These are the actual fixtures Koki Tanaka employed for his participation in an exhibition at the French art center, FRAC, in Champagne-Ardenne. The videos are juxtaposed with photographs showing the objects as they appear when put in their usual places.
The ordinary, everyday objects appearing in Tanaka's works behave as if they had unique qualities in fact unknown to us, qualities not revealed in their exceedingly commonplace appearance. Our discovery of such aspects hidden in common objects awaken our imaginations to the countless small events existing in the world, unbeknown to us.
